Leitrim’s Hidden Gem

A beautiful piece wrote about Brooklawn House Bed & Breakfast from John at Pixie Dust Photography. John did a fabulous job photographing our property and we would highly recommend him if you ever need a pro!

Every once in a while, you find a place that you immediately fall in love with. I’ve experienced this a lot around Ireland and this island never ceases to amaze me. As it happens, one of County Leitrim’s landmarks is Lough Rynn Castle, a beautiful estate not very far from Carrick-on-Shannon.

Lough Rynn Castle

About a year ago, I found a narrow, winding road leading to the castle, right through the woods. Passing by one day, I saw a road going left up the hill, with a sign that read Brooklawn House B&B. I didn’t pay much attention to it, but every time I’d pass by I’d be curious to go and see what’s up there. Eventually, my curiosity was satisfied last weekend, when I was invited to come by and take some photographs of the place.

According to history, this place was the summer residence of the Clements family, who owned the entire Lough Rynn estate between 1750 and the 1970s. Now the place is owned by Dara, lovely lady who turned it into an exquisite Bed & Breakfast. Besides the lovely interior, what struck me the most about it was the location. You literally go through the forest, follow the road until you reach the entrance and you’ll find yourself in front of one of the most beautiful places that Leitrim has to offer.

The interior is tastefully decorated, the food is delicious and the view from the porch is outstanding. I believe this kind of places are special, but most of the time the host is the one who adds that sprinkle of magic. From the first moment I met Dara, I found her to be very kind, welcoming and always smiling. She gave me a tour of the house and I noticed how much she loves what she does, from managing the B&B to baking and looking after her garden.

This is the perfect place for a “staycation“ in the heart of rural Ireland. It’s wonderful to discover hidden gems like this, while the recent relaunch of the Leitrim Tourism website can help anyone looking for a little local adventure. In the mean time, if you find yourself around Lough Rynn, make sure to pop into Brooklawn House, say hi to Dara and book yourself for a couple of nights in.
